Monday, December 16, 2002

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (December 16, 2002) - East Tennessee State University women's soccer team has been honored for the second consecutive year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America for success not only on the field but also in the classroom. The Buccaneers received the "College Team Academic Award" for achieving a team grade point average of 3.05 for the 2001-2002 academic year. "Winning this for the second year in a row has set an example for future teams in being a true student-athlete," said Buccaneer head coach Heather Henson. For the spring 2002 academic year, the ETSU women's soccer team had eight players make the dean's list, with two players earning a 4.0, and five making the honor roll. "I'm very proud of our players for showing dedication in the classroom as well as on the field," said Henson. "We have created a competitive academic environment by setting these standards for our future student-athletes." The NSCAA recognized 67 men's and 213 women's programs this year. The award is based on the academic performance of a team during the previous academic year. The teams, which represent all levels of play from NCAA Division I to NAIA, are compiled and nominated by the NSCAA coaches from around the country.
