JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 4, 2003) - At halftime of Tuesday night's men's basketball victory over VMI, the ETSU Athletic Department honored Fall 2002's outstanding academic achievements with Academic Recognition Night. East Tennessee State honored the 99 current student-athletes and six post-eligibility student-athletes that were members of the Dean's List, or the Buccaneer Honor Roll. Garnering special recognition was the men's tennis team, that had ETSU's top team GPA in Fall 2002 with a 3.9. Other 3.0 team GPA performances were women's cross country, women's track and field, men's golf, women's golf and softball. Men's tennis was a ITA Academic All-American Team in 2002, while women's soccer was recognized as a College Team Academic Winner by the National Soccer Coaches of America. Seven ETSU student athletes turned in 4.0 GPA's in Fall: Football's Scott Carter (Knoxville, Tenn.), men's basketball's Brad Nuckles (Council, Va.), women's track and field's Jennifer Whittington (Pounding Mill, Va.) and Cheryl Howard (Sugar Run, Pa.), women's golf's Kristin Fletcher (Cookeville, Tenn.) and men's tennis' Marcos Pavlovich (Otamendi, Argentina) and Moises Serrano (Bucaramanga, Colombia). Carter was named as a Division I-AA Athletics Director's Association All-Star and was a Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-District selection. His teammates Kai Shreckenberg (Wuppertal, Germany) and Adam Howell (Elizabethton, Tenn.) were also All-District honorees.
