Tuesday, May 04, 2004

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 4, 2004) - In the latest NCAA Division I baseball statistics, released Tuesday, East Tennessee State junior catcher Caleb Moore (Knoxville, Tenn.) leads the nation in batting average and doubles. Moore is batting .475 on the season while Keith Stegbauer of Central Connecticut State is second at .459. Caleb has hit 23 doubles in 41 games, averaging .56 per game. Vanderbilt's Warner Jones is a close second with .55 doubles per game. He is threatening several marks in the ETSU and SoCon record books. Moore is just two points shy of the conference batting average record, which is .477 by Appalachian State's Randy Ingle in 1979. Caleb is already just three doubles shy of tying the SoCon record, held by several players with 26. Moore is on pace to shatter the Buccaneer record for highest season batting average, held by Steve Meredith who hit .419 in 1988. He is also on pace to break Andy Baxter's single-season doubles record (25 in 2001) and could also threaten Nathan Copeland's record for total bases in a season (159, 2001). Caleb is currently on pace to finish second in ETSU history with his .766 slugging percentage and .528 on-base percentage. He leads the Southern Conference in both of those categories. Moore was named Southern Conference Player of the Week on Monday after batting .579 last and leading the Bucs to a 4-0 record against Virginia Tech and The Citadel. He is currently in the middle of a 10-game hitting streak while recording multiple hits in nine-straight games. Over those nine games, Moore is batting an incredible .628 with 27 hits in 43 at bats. The Bucs return to action Wednesday night at 7 p.m. EST against Tennessee Tech from Cookeville, Tenn. ETSU's next home game will take place on May 18 at 7 p.m., also against Tennessee Tech.
