ETSU men's basketball inks Canadian prep star Surmacz

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 21, 2004) - East Tennessee State University men's basketball coach Murry Bartow announced on Wednesday that 6-foot-8 forward Greg Surmacz out of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, has signed to play with the Buccaneers beginning with the 2004-05 season. Surmacz, who averaged 30 points and 14 rebounds as a senior at Peterborough Collegiate High School, led his team to a 39-8 overall record the past two seasons and back-to-back trips to the state semifinals. His school's second-leading scorer all-time, Surmacz is a member of the Canadian Junior National Team. "Greg will certainly add to our inside game, but he also has the ability to float out and hit shots," said Bartow, whose team is coming off a championship season in 2004 and has made back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament. "We think Greg fits the mold that we are looking for here at ETSU because he's a good student and a good person. He had a great prep career in Canada and we think he has a bright future at ETSU." The son of Fred and Atlantis Surmacz, Greg - who is interested in studying sports medicine, management or kinesiology while at ETSU - will provide the Bucs with another quality student and athlete. Surmacz joins Port Richey, Fla., native Andrew Reed as part of the Bucs' 2004-05 recruiting class. ETSU has one remaining scholarship to fill for the upcoming season.
