ETSU senior Zakee Wadood named SoCon Player of the Week

Tuesday, December 09, 2003

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Dec. 9, 2003) - East Tennessee State senior forward Zakee Wadood (Lonoke, Ark.) has been named the Southern Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 2-8. Wadood, a 6-5, 210-pound senior forward, led the SoCon with a 26.5 scoring average and a 10.0 rebounding average in ETSU's victories last week over UNC Asheville (12/3) and Georgia Southern (12/6). Wadood scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the 78-56 victory over UNCA, and he followed that up with a career-high 30 points and 12 rebounds in a 91-85 win over the Eagles in the Bucs' Southern Conference opener at Memorial Center. For the week, Wadood converted 19-of-34 field goal attempts (55.9 percent), blocked a league-best seven shots and also led the league with seven steals. He also made two of his four 3-point field goal attempts. "Obviously, he had a great week," said ETSU head coach Murry Bartow. "Zakee is just a great leader for us and he does so many things to help us win. It's not just the points, the steals, the rebounds or the blocks, but it's all the little things that he does too. He's just a lot of fun to coach." Wadood is just six points shy of reaching 1,000 for his career, and he will be looking to eclipse that mark next week when the Bucs travel to face Atlantic Coast Conference foe Clemson on Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
