DAVIDSON, N.C. (Mar. 6, 2004) - ETSU's three-game winning streak was snapped Saturday afternoon as the Bucs fell to Davidson, 9-5, from Wildcat Park in Davidson, N.C. The game was a back-and-forth affair as the two teams traded the lead on several occasions. East Tennessee State (8-7, 1-1 SoCon) went ahead with a run on two hits in the top of the second. With one down, junior catcher Caleb Moore (Knoxville, Tenn.) lined a single up the middle then advanced to third on a single to left center by freshman designated hitter Stephen Douglas (Kennesaw, Ga.). Sophomore third baseman Greg Roberts (Douglas, Ga.) drove Moore in from third with a ground ball to third. Davidson (4-4, 1-1 SoCon) third baseman Jay Heafner tied the game in the bottom of the frame, hitting a home run over the left field wall. The blast was Heafner's second of the series, having also hit a homer to left Friday night. The Bucs regained the lead in the top of the third, rallying to score a run with two outs. Senior shortstop Andy Howdeshell (Maryville, Tenn.) drew a walk with two down and moved to second on a single to right by sophomore first baseman Blake Church (Roswell, Ga.). Church then crossed the plate as Wildcat starter Andy Carter threw two consecutive wild pitches. The Wildcats responded immediately, tying the game at two with a run in the bottom of the third. Shortstop Eli Benefield doubled off the left field wall and scored on a subsequent single by right fielder Sam Navarro. Davidson took their first lead of the series, going up 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Catcher Alex Entrekin and Heafner led off the inning with back to back singles. Both baserunners moved up on a double steal, followed by a sacrifice fly by first baseman Alden Crissey. ETSU regained the lead in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs to go up 5-3. With one out, Byrne hit his second home run of the season, a blast deep over the right-center field wall. Howdeshell followed with a double to right-center then scored on a two-out single to right by sophomore second baseman Josiah Glafenhein (Knoxville, Tenn.). Glafenhein, who advanced to second on the throw and to third and on an error, crossed the plate on a wild pitch. The resilient Wildcats fought back once again in the bottom of the fifth, tying the game at five. Navarro walked with one out and was on base as center fielder Michael Muniz belted a two-run homer over the right field wall. Davidson broke the game open with a two-out four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh. Muniz hit an infield single followed by another single by Entrekin. Heafner then came to the plate and reached on a fielder's choice while Muniz scored on an error. Crissey followed with an infield single with Entrekin scoring on a throwing error. Designated hitter Gregory Zage cleared the bases with a double down the right field line, scoring Crissey and Heafner. Rob Wilson (2-0) earned the win for Davidson after allowing no runs on just one hit in 4.1 relief innings. He also struck out two while walking none. Freshman righty Caleb Glafenhein (Knoxville, Tenn.) was charged with the loss (1-1), allowing four earned runs on five hits in two innings pitched. Moore led the Bucs at the plate, going 3-for-4 while Josiah Glafenhein had two base hits. Davidson was paced by Muniz, who went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Zage also drove in two runs while Entrekin and Heafner each scored two. The Bucs and Wildcats will play the final game of their three-game weekend set Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. from Wildcat Park in Davidson, N.C.
