Bucs Pick Up Win Against UAB, 4-1

NORFOLK, Va. (Mar. 27, 2004) - The East Tennessee State men's tennis team defeated UAB, 4-1, in Norfolk, Va. on Saturday. The Bucs improve to 9-5 overall, 2-0 in the SoCon with the win. ETSU picked up the doubles point, by winning all three matches. In the No. 1 spot, the Buccaneers' Oscar Posada (Valencia, Venezuela) and Alejandro Salazar (Arequipa, Peru) ripped past the Blazers' Andre Maier and Anton Mavrin in an 8-3 decision. In the No. 2 tilt, Diego Iglesias (Mar del Plata, Argentina) and Moisés Serrano (Bucaramanga, Columbia) defeated UAB's Dino Mancarella and Sanzaruz Zaman, 8-6. The Blazers' duo of Ivan Andreev and Kristijan Mitrovski were 8-4 losers to East Tennessee's Fernando Fiuri (Villa Maria, Argentina) and Felix Insaurralde (Asunción, Paraguay) in No. 3 slot. In singles action, the Bucs continued to dominate, winning three of four completed matches. In the No. 1 position, ETSU's Salazar was a 7-5, 6-4, winner over the Blazers' Mavrin. UAB's Maier fell to the Bucs' Posada, 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 2 spot. East Tennessee's Iglesias defeated the Blazers' Mitrovski, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 3 tilt. UAB's Zaman was the only Blazer to record a victory as he defeated ETSU's Fiuri, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 4 singles position. The No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches were stopped once the match was decided. The ETSU men's tennis team will now return for a stretch of two consecutive home games against Southern Conference opponents College of Charleston and The Citadel from April 2 to April 4.
