JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Mar. 7, 2004) - The East Tennessee State women's tennis team dropped their Saturday match up against UNC Charlotte 5-2 in Johnson City, Tenn. The Bucs record for the spring season is now 7-6. In doubles action, ETSU won two of the three matches to secure the point. Wins came from the pairs of Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) and Mariya Ilyina (Kyiv, Ukraine),and Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.). Ziolkowska and Ilyina defeated UNC Charlotte's Ofra Friedman and Kathy Robey in the No. 2 slot, 8-6. In the No. 3 doubles, Halim and Irey defeated Hatch and Clark 8-1. Courtney McInnis (Waterboro, Maine) and Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.) played in the No. 1 position and battled in their 8-5 loss to Laura Swain and Ashley Murray. Head coach Steve Brooks stated, "We started the match well winning the doubles point. Courtney and Jewel are starting to come together the way I know they can." In singles play, Halim took away the only win for the Bucs in a 6-4, 6-1 decision against UNC Charlotte's Murray. "Going into singles, I knew it would be tough," commented Brooks. "Charlotte is quick, scrappy, and a good team. The winds blew in Charlotte's favor today and they were able to win five of the singles points. I have to say that today was pretty disappointing after the way we have been playing singles. We had our shots but just weren't able to make them." The Bucs continue play with a home match against Elon to open SoCon action. UNC Charlotte 5, ETSU 2 Doubles: 1. Laura Swain/Ashley Murray (UNCC) def. Courtney McInnis/Jewel Aldea (ETSU) def. 8-5 2.
