RICHMOND, Ky. (Feb. 14, 2004) - The East Tennessee State women's tennis team suffered a 4-3 loss on the road against Southern Illinois University. The Bucs now hold a 6-4 record. "They are a very consistent team," commented head coach Steve Brooks. "Five of my top six are not at 100 percent and it showed against this veteran team. This weekend we played the worst doubles we have ever played. We were too aggressive and couldn't keep the ball in the court. We have almost two weeks until our next match, which will give us time to clean things up and get healthy." SIU managed to attack early and earn the doubles point. At the top position, ETSU's Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) and Mariya Ilyina (Warsaw, Poland) battled SIU's Maria Blanco and Jessica Knitter for ETSU's only doubles victory 9-7. The Bucs gave the SIU Salukis a good battle in singles action splitting the points 3-3. Alejandra Blanco defeated Courtney McInnis (Waterboro, Maine), 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1, but Ziolkowska was able to handle Maria Blanco, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 2. ETSU picked up another victory in the No. 3 singles, as Buccaneer junior Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) defeated Jessica Knitter in a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 decision. At No. 4, Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.) was defeated by Tana Trapani 6-2, 6-2. In the No. 5 slot, Mariya Ilyina (Warsaw, Poland) garnered a win over Zoya Honarmand 6-1, 6-1. Rounding out the line-up, Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.) played No. 6 singles and lost the critical point of the match to Zuzana Tpalovic 6-1, 6-1.
