RICHMOND, Ky. (Feb. 14, 2004) - East Tennessee State women's tennis team was defeated by Eastern Kentucky 5-2 in an away contest held early Saturday morning. The Lady Bucs are 6-3 in the year. Head coach Steve Brooks "I can't take anything from this determined EKU squad. They played great at 1, 3, and 5 singles. We are banged up with the flu, No. 1 McInnis did not play and we could have used her today." EKU won the doubles point as Lindsay Herrera and Terin Roof won an 8-5 decision at No. 1 over Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) and Mariya Ilyina (Kyiv, Ukraine). Freshman duo Lucia Vojtkova and Tessa Williams won at No. 3 doubles over ETSU's Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.) and Tatiana Arriaran (Cochabamba, Bolivia). In singles action, junior Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) and freshman Ilyina earned wins in the No. 2 and No. 4 slots respectively. Halim won her battle against EKU's Herrara 6-4, 6-2 while Ilyina blanked EKU's Roof 6-0, 6-0. ETSU is scheduled to face Southern Illinois today at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Kentucky 5, ETSU 2 Doubles 1.
