ETSU Women's Tennis Falls to No. 17 VCU, 4-1

RICHMOND, Va. (Feb. 1, 2004) - The East Tennessee State women's tennis team continued competition at the VCU 4-1 Invitational at the Thalhimer Tennis Center with two losses in the final day of competition. In the morning match, Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Mariya Ilyina (Kyiv, Ukraine) both won in singles action in the Bucs' loss to the American Eagles 3-2. Halim def. Ashley Retley 6-0, 3-6, 6-4, while Ilyina def. Hollyn-Taub 6-1, 6-1. Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.) was defeated by Georgieva 6-4, 7-5, in the No. 1 singles spot, while Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) was defeated by Katarina Kollarova in a tight 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-4 match-up in the No. 2 spot. To secure the win for the Eagles, Sasha Zerkalova and Julia Collarusso defeated Courtney McInnis (Waterboro, Maine) and Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.), 6-0, 6-3, in the only doubles match-up. ETSU then went on to face VCU in their second match of the day's competition. The Bucs lost the battle against the No. 17 ranked VCU Rams 4-1. Ilyina walked away with the only win for the team against VCU's Diana O'Campo 6-0, 6-0. The freshman Ilyina finished the weekend with an impressive 3-0 record. Head coach Steve Brooks said, "They are a very tough team and even though the score was lopsided, we played tough and competitive in each of the matches today against VCU. " The Bucs will return to action when they host a tripleheader against Liberty, Carson-Newman, and Milligan College on Feb. 8 begining at 11:00 a.m. RESULTS American 3, ETSU 2 Singles 1.
