Women's Tennis Competes at 2003 Southern Intercollegiate Tournament

COLUMBIA, S.C. (October 31, 2003) - The East Tennessee State women's tennis team began competition Friday in the 2003 Southern Intercollegiate Tournament hosted by the University of South Carolina. The seven-flight tournament fields players from 17 different schools. Two doubles pairs advanced in their brackets. ETSU's Mariya Ilyina (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) defeated Lauren Fillietuz and Megan Bechtold from UNC - Wilmington 9-8 (5). The Buccaneer pair of Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.) and Courtney McInnis (Waterboro, Maine) also moved ahead in competition by beating another UNC - Wilmington pair, Cheri Elkin and Kacie Smith, 8-6. In singles competition, all of ETSU's players were sent to the consolation brackets after the first day. McInnis saw the only victory in singles competition by defeating Armstrong Atlantic's Kristen Kelly 7-5, 6-3. However, McInnis was defeated in the second round by Danielle Moita of Winthrop 6-1, 6-1. Competition at the 2003 Southern Intercollegiate will continue Saturday morning for the Buccaneer squad. Friday's Results Singles A1 - Lyndsay Shosho (GT) def.
