Buccaneers Finish Final Day of Virginia Tech Tournament

BLACKSBURG, Va. (Sept. 28, 2003) - The final day of the Virginia Tech Tournament concluded with the Buccaneer women's tennis team winning four of its six singles consolation matches and two of its four doubles consolation matches. Sophomore Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.) defeated Marshall's Holly Asel 6-2, 7-5 to place ninth in singles flight C. Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland), Mariya Ilyina (Kyiv, Ukraine), and Tatiana Arriaran (Cochabamba, Bolivia) also won their consolation matches. In doubles, Ilyina and Courtney McInnis (Waterboro, Maine) took sixth place with their loss to Wake Forest's Blakely Offutt and Elizabeth Proctor 8-4. Pairs Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.), and Aimee Villavicencio (Lexington, Ky.) and Ziolkowska won their matches 8-6 and 8-3 respectively. Women's tennis will travel to their third scheduled fall tournament, the Wake Forrest Tournament, held next weekend in Winston-Salem, N.C.
