Boone, N.C. (Sept. 23, 2003) -- ETSU got off to a strong start, but couldn't sustain the positive momentum as Appalachian State went on to a 26-30, 30-17, 30-25, 30-18 victory over the visiting Buccaneers Tuesday night at the Holmes Center. It appeared the Appalachian was in for a long evening when it came out of the gates by committing as many errors as it had kills (10) in the opening game. ETSU (2-12, 0-2 SoCon)capitalized on the early ASU mistakes and outhit the Mountaineers .135 to .000 to claim the game one win. However, ASU shook off the game-one setback and answered with a strong performance in the 30-17 game-two victory. 19 of Appalachianšs 30 points in the game came on kills, while the Mountaineers committed just three errors. Appalachian (3-10, 1-0) continued to hit at a torrid clip in games three and four to seal its first victory in seven matches. Led by a match-high 18 kills from junior Samantha Giudici, the Mountaineers posted a .383 hitting percentage (50-12-99) over the final three games to turn the match around. "It is very difficult to win when we make so many errors," said ETSU head Lindsey Devine. "We just couldn't get into a rhythm, and it seemed like we were always trying to come from behind." Senior Kate Steidle (Waynesboro, Va.) posted a season-high 16 kills, while freshman Kelsey Sherich (Ogallala, Neb.) followed with 15 kills. Sherich tallied a team season-high 40 attack attempts in the contest for a .300 hitting percentage. Defensively, the Buccaneers recorded a season-high eight blocks on the evening, which equaled their opponent. ETSU will have exactly one week to prepare for its next match. The Bucs will play at Western Carolina on Tuesday, Sept. 30. The showdown against the Catamounts is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
