Thursday, July 03, 2003

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (July 3, 2003) - East Tennessee State head volleyball coach Lindsey Devine has named Phuong Luong as her new assistant coach. Luong will enter his first season with the Buccaneers after spending two years as the assistant volleyball coach at the University of Wyoming. He brings 11 years of coaching experience to ETSU, ranging from the high school level to NCAA Division I. "Phuong brings a vast knowledge of the sport to the ETSU volleyball program," Devine said. "He has been successful both as an assistant and head coach at the collegiate level. I am happy Phuong is part of our team because he approaches his job with a lot of energy, and he is very passionate about teaching student-athletes." Luong attended Ferris State where he played four years with the school's highly competitive club team, as well as two seasons with the Grand Rapids AAU Junior Olympic 18's Elite Team. From there Luong spent two more years playing in the Midwest Professional Volleyball Association. Luong graduated from Ferris State in May of 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business management with a minor in finance. Luong's first coaching job came as an assistant at East Grand Rapids High School, where the team earned conference and district championships in 1991 and 1992. His first head coaching opportunity came with the Reed City Smash 18's Elite squad, and then as the head coach at Big Rapids High School from 1994-1996. During that time, Luong also served as a graduate/student assistant for the Ferris State women's volleyball program, where he coordinated team offensive play call during matches, and analyzed video for scouting purposes among other duties. From there, Luong's coaching career took off. He became the first assistant of the Univ. of New Hampshire women's team from 1996-1998. Luong helped the Wildcats reach the conference finals in his second year as a coach. He then became the first assistant at Northeastern University, where the team put together back-to-back 20-win seasons, which led to the men's head coaching job at Wentworth Institute of Technology. Luong led Wentworth to conference championships from 1998-2000 and finished 13th in the AVCA Div. III final rankings in 1999. As a coach at New Hampshire, Wentworth, and Northeastern, Luong's teams have produced numerous all-conference performers, including rookie and player of the year award winners. Luong also spent two years as the coordinator with the New Hampshire Seacoast Junior Olympic Volleyball Program. He served on the Board of Director's Committee and coached the 16's and 18's Elite team. The East Coast 18's Elite team captured the silver division team championship at Penn State. In April of 1996, Luong was named the head coach for West Michigan's Jr. 18's AAU volleyball program. In just one season with the team, Luong helped lead his squad to a first place finish at the Michigan State AAU Junior National Championship. All six seniors that Luong coached that season went on to play volleyball at the collegiate level. While at Wyoming, Luong's duties consisted of: practice and game planning, recruiting, scouting, game management responsibilities, compliance, and various administrative duties. He coordinated the summer camps and was responsible for tracking the student-athletes' academic progress. He specialized in the training of setters, outside hitters and defensive specialists. East Tennessee State's first match of the 2003 season will be at the Virginia Tech Hokie Classic, where the Buccaneers will face Campbell on Friday, Aug. 29.
