NASHVILLE, Tenn. (April 18, 2004) - Three Buccaneer track and field athlete's, Kristin Truman (Johnson City, Tenn.), Anna Marie Riccardi (Canfielf, Ohio), and James Rainer (Alcoa, Tenn.) recorded NCAA Regional Qualifying marks at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tenn. this weekend. "As a staff we are excited that we had three athletes reach these qualifying marks, it's always a goal to achieve this during the season," said assistant coach Michelle Byrne. Truman, a senior at ETSU, and Riccardi, a freshman, have been working closely with volunteer assistant coach Jason Farr in the high jump and triple jump. This weekend their hard work and dedication paid off as Truman recorded a 12.26m mark in the triple jump which is the NCAA DI Regional Qualifying Mark. Truman's mark placed her third overall at the meet. Riccardi, placed second in the high jump with a mark of 1.73m, which is the DI Regional Qualifying Mark for the event. Sophomore Rainer, who had a impressive indoor season but has been slowed in the outdoor season due to an injury, had an impressive second meet of the season recording a time of 10.48 in the 100 meter dash for a fifth-place finish. His mark was under the DI Regional Qualifying Mark of 10.50. Also providing strong performances for ETSU on the women's side were Chantelle Vernon (Markham, Ontario) in the 100 meters with a time of 11.90 for fifth place, Natasha Peyton (Chesterfield, Va.) in the 100 meters with a time of 12.45 for 17th place and 25.61 in the 200 meters for 16th place, Kim Simmons (Knoxville, Tenn.) in the 400 meters with a time of 55.47 for third place, and Jennifer Habbestad (Tampa, Fla.) in the 800 meters with a time of 2:17.43 for eighth place. On the men's side, ETSU had solid races from Brad Yewer (Newbury, England) in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.24 for fifth place and David Cabbler (Roanoke, Va.) in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.62 for fifth place. In the end when scoring was completed, ETSU's women's team finished sixth overall, while the men finished fifth. "Overall it was a good track meet for us to participate in prior to conference," commented head coach David E. Walker. The Southern Conference Championship is set to take place at Appalachian State in Boone, N.C. from May 1-2.
