Second half surge lifts Lady Bucs over College of Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. (Feb. 2, 2004) -- Down 36-35 at halftime, the East Tennessee State women's basketball team was able to rally to an eventual 77-59 victory over College of Charleston Monday from John Kresse Arena in Charleston, S.C. ETSU (9-10, 9-5 SoCon) was led by junior Tiffani Mayes (Sumter, S.C.), who tallied 23 points and 15 rebounds -- both game highs -- en route to her team-leading sixth double-double of the season. Senior Kiya Verdell (Hartwell, Ga.) overcame a poor shooting effort in the first half (3-of-12) and finished with 18 points followed by fellow senior Lauren Trantham (Asheville, N.C.), who netted 15. Trantham also garnered a game-high four blocks, while Verdell had four of the team's 12 steals. The Cougars have now lost to ETSU by a combined 48 points this season, while the Lady Bucs snap a two-game losing streak. ETSU head coach Karen Kemp picked up her 118th career coaching victory at the helm of the Lady Bucs, tying her with Susan Yow as the school's all-time winningest coach. College of Charleston was led by 17 points from Patrice Bryant and 13 points and 10 rebounds from Carrie Geden. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 5-16 overall and 3-11 in the SoCon. ETSU will head back to Johnson City where it will host non-conference opponent Tennessee Tech this Wednesday, Feb. 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Memorial Center. Tennessee Tech enter's Wednesday's contest with a 17-2 all-time record versus the Lady Bucs. However, Kemp is a combined 19-4 at home againist non-conference opponents during her 10-year tenure.
