Friday, September 19, 2003

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (September 19, 2003) - The East Tennessee State women's soccer team (5-1-0 overall, 1-0-0 SoCon) earned their first Southern Conference victory of the season against the College of Charleston (2-4-0, 0-1-0) with a 2-1 win at Liberty Bell Field. Tonight's win was the first win over the Cougars since the inception of the Buccaneer women's soccer program. ETSU scored first when junior Jennifer Fields (Mount Airy, Md.) put the ball in from five yards in front of the net at 19:20. Freshman Emily Fulcher (New Bern, N.C.) assisted on Fields' second goal of the season and the only goal of the first half. Seconds after the start of the second half, Andrea Brown (High Point, N.C.) scored an unassisted goal. The senior took a shot from 18 yards out to beat the Charleston goalkeeper Alice Keeney for the game-winning goal. "Andrea's goal was phenomenal it was a line drive right to the back of the net. She stepped up tremendously as a senior and did a great job," commented head coach Heather Henson. With seven minutes of play left in the game, Perri Brenner notched the Cougars' lone goal with a kick from 16 yards outside the goal line to bring the final score of 2-1. "Kevin Dempsey does a great job at the College of Charleston," said Henson. "They come right at you and they will be coming strong and fast." ETSU keeper Heather Sanden (Manassas, Va.) made 15 saves and rose to 5-1-0, while Keeney made only 1 save and fell to 0-1-0. "A lot of energy went into that game and our team toughed it out and fought through the last 10 minutes," stated Henson. "We like shutouts, but ultimately we like wins better." Next Friday, the Bucs travel to Rock Hill, S.C. to face Winthrop at 5:30p.m. before hosting Furman at home on Sunday at 2:00p.m.
