Women's Soccer Kicks Off Practice
Thursday, August 14, 2003Johnson City, Tenn. (August 14, 2003) - The East Tennessee State University women's soccer team began preparations for the upcoming season on Monday of this week.
The Buccaneers look to build on the momentum of last year, which was one of the best seasons in the six-year history of the program. The 2002 squad broke records both offensively and defensively and the 2003 squad promises to continue this building process.
"The level of competition at practice so far has been very good," commented head coach Heather Henson. "Everyone is playing with pace and getting stuck in on tackles; it has been a pleasure to see the team sweat and work hard."
The team returns nine players from last year's roster, including senior midfielder Andrea Brown (High Point, N.C.) and senior keeper Heather Sanden (Manassas, Va.). Ten newcomers join the squad this fall, which will add to the diversity and overall strength of the team.
Henson also added a new assistant coach, Juan Bernedo, for the upcoming season.
"The addition of Juan to the staff has already started to make a difference in the team. He brings a lot of experience to the staff as well as a great amount of energy," said Henson.
The Buccaneers will host a scrimmage against VMI on Aug. 22 at the Liberty Bell Soccer Complex. The season will officially begin for ETSU when it partakes in the Lady Gov Classic at Austin Peay on Aug. 29 against Lipscomb. The first conference match of the season for the Buccaneers will be a home contest on Sept. 19 against the College of Charleston.
