Dr. Shelton has an excellent background in athletics, having been a player, coach and official. She joined the ETSU program in 1968 as head women's basketball coach, physical education instructor and women's intramural director. She became assistant athletics director and coordinator of women's athletics in 1974, was named associate athletics director in 1980, and interim director of athletics in May of 1990. Dr. Shelton coached basketball and volleyball and Georgetown College in Kentucky before coming to ETSU in 1968. She also has a wide reputation as a highly capable official. She officiated on state, regional and national levels. Dr. Shelton received the ETSU Distinguished Staff Award in 1987 and was honored with the 1991 Altrusa Club Honorarium Award for Women and Industry. She also received the 1991 National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators NCAA District II Administrator-of-the-Year Award. She is active in community and church work as well. A native of Kentucky, Dr. Shelton graduated from Georgetown College in 1966 with a degree in physical education and biology.
