ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics celebrates National Student-Athlete Day

Thursday, April 07, 2005

(April 7, 2005) - The East Tennessee State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics celebrated National Student-Athlete Day with festivities in the Bill G. Humphreys Champs Life Skills Center this afternoon.  ETSU Athletics Director Dave Mullins highlighted academic, community service efforts and competitive success that Buccaneer athletes have achieved throughout the year, while East Tennessee State University Vice President for Administration and Chief Operating Officer Dr. Wilsie Bishop read a proclamation celebrating student-athlete achievements.

This is the 18th celebration of National Student-Athlete Day celebrated annually on April 6.  The day has become a nationally celebrated day to honor student-athletes who have achieved excellence in academics and athletics, while making significant contributions to the community.  Not only is the day to honor the student-athlete, but also those individuals who help them succeed; their parents, coaches, academic advisors, faculty, support staff and administration.

ETSU will conclude National Student-Athlete Day celebrations tomorrow when they participate in Andrea Walks with Andrea Bredesen, wife of the Governor, to raise awareness of Children's Advocacy groups.  The walk begins at Johnson City Medical Center at 9:00 a.m. Friday morning.
