GREENVILLE, S.C. (April 22, 2005) - The East Tennessee State University women's golf team is currently second on the team leaderboard after first round play Friday in the Southern Conference Championships at the Furman University Golf Course.

Junior Ashley Barton (Seffner, Fla.) led the Lady Bucs on the opening day, firing a 1-over 73 and finishing second on the individual leaderboard behind Furman's Jenny Suh, who fired a 4-under 68. The Bucs also trail Furman on the team leaderboard, as ETSU posted a score of 307 and are nine strokes back of the Paladins.

"We're coming into this tournament with a completely different attitude than we've had the last two years," said ETSU head coach Stefanie Reynolds, whose team actually trailed by just one stroke after nine holes.  "This team played the first 14 holes of the tournament completely relaxed and confident. The front nine we played very well, but we lost a few strokes on the last couple holes and ended up nine strokes back.

"We have two more days and the girls are feeling good about where we are."

Lady Buc freshman Natalia Giraldo (Cali, Colombia) finished sixth after posting a 5-over 77, while other ETSU results included a 12th-place finish for freshman Cindy Phillips (Johnson City, Tenn.) and 15th-place showings by freshman Maria Ringdahl (Oland, Sweden) and senior Danielle O'Reilly (Whistler, British Columbia).
