JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (July 6, 2004) - Former East Tennessee State left-handed pitcher Josh Kite (Greeneville, Tenn.) recently signed a professional contract with Major League Baseball's Cleveland Indians. Kite is currently pitching for the Burlington Indians in the rookie-level Appalachian League. Josh appeared in 29 games last season for the Bucs, posting a 3-3 record and a 5.46 ERA. He pitched a career-high 56 innings and struck out 50 while walking 25. Kite was 3-0 with a 2.67 ERA and a save in Southern Conference play, striking out 30 batters in 30.1 innings. Kite was an integral part of the Buccaneer pitching staff over the last four seasons, starting 19 games and appearing in relief on 66 occasions. He broke the ETSU single-season appearances record last season and is tied for the career record (85) with former Buccaneer righty Jarrod Hyder. Josh has been pitching exclusively in relief for the Indians, going 0-1 in three appearances. He has allowed five hits in 5.2 innings and struck out five. "I am extremely excited and proud of Josh," said ETSU head coach Tony Skole. "It has been gratifying watching him grow as a person and a player over the last four years. It will be exciting to watch him climb the professional ladder." Burlington is currently tied for third place in the Appalachian League East Division at 6-9, five games behind first-place Pulaski.
