SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Feb. 28, 2005) - On Monday, the Southern Conference named East Tennessee State guard Tim Smith (Newport News, Va.) as its Men's Basketball Player of the Week for games played between Feb. 22-26.

Smith, a 5-9 junior, scored a career-high 41 points in ETSU's 97-91 loss at Georgia Southern on Feb. 26. He made 16-of-29 field goal attempts and five of seven 3-point shots. His 41 points is the second-most scored by a SoCon player this season.

Other's considered for the honor were Georgia Southern's Elton Nesbitt, Western Carolina's David Berghoefer, Davidson's Ian Johnson, Furman's Moussa Diagne, UNC Greensboro's Ricky Hickman and Wofford's Tyler Berg.

Smith and the rest of the Buccaneers will return to action Wednesday in first round play at the Southern Conference Tournament in Chattanooga. The Bucs will face Furman at 6 p.m. Smith, who is a two-time SoCon Tournament MVP, will be trying to lead his team to a third-straight SoCon Tournament title, but to do so, ETSU will have to become the first team in the tournament's history to win four-straight games.
