Lady Bucs capture doubleheader sweep over Mountaineers

Saturday, April 09, 2005

JOHNSON CITY, TENN. (April 9, 2005) -  The Lady Bucs softball squad hosted Southern Conference foe Appalachian State today for two of the three games in the weekend series.  ETSU managed two victories this afternoon, winning game one 2-1 and game two 2-1 as well.  With the victory, the Bucs move to 19-20, 5-3 in SoCon competition for the season, while the Mountaineers fall to 14-26, 1-10 in SoCon play.  Leading the way for the Bucs was senior Danielle Spetar (Knoxville, Tenn.) who posted three hits, one run and one RBI in the two victories, while pitchers Belinda Barrera (Fayetteville, N.C.) recorded her seventh win of the year and freshman Brittney Lehrschall (Leland, N.C.) posted her second win of her rookie campaign.

The Mountaineers struck early in game one, scoring their only run of the game in the top of the first inning, the result of a Lady Bucs error.  Both Barrera and ASU pitcher Jennifer Hurley held the opposing offense silent, until the bottom of the sixth inning when a Mary Beth Hazelwood (Knoxville, Tenn.) fly ball sent Spetar home from second evening the score at 1-1.  The ETSU defense held strong in the top of the seventh as they retired the ASU side in order with the chance to capture the win in the bottom half of the inning.

Stephanie Gaynord (Manassas, Va.) opened the inning with a walk as Lady Bucs catcher Jessica Lonsinger (Dale City, Va.) managed the sacrifice bunt advancing Gaynord into scoring position at second base.  A wild pitch by the ASU pitcher sent Gaynord to third and an Amanda Haverman (Kirkwood, Mo.) fly ball to center field scored Gaynord in fashion as ETSU took the 2-1 win.

The Bucs struck first in game two in the bottom of the third after a Briana Knight (Brier, Wa.) walk, Janine Sprague (Hillsborough, N.C.) smashed a two out triple into the center field fence scoring Knight.  After a Spetar single and Sprague score, Lindsay Lane (Erwin, Tenn.) reached on an error by the Mountaineer shortstop advancing Spetar to second, however a Hazelwood fly out to second base ended the ETSU threat.

Answering in the top of the fourth inning, ASU managed one run on Lehrschall, however errorless ETSU defense held onto the slight 2-1 advantage.  ETSU pitcher Courtney Jenkins (Knoxville, Tenn.) recorded the save as the Bucs captured the afternoon sweep of the Mountaineers with the eventual 2-1 win.

In game two, Sprague added one hit, one run and one RBI, while Jenkins allowed no hits in her sixth relief appearance of 2005.

"I am very proud of the way our girls battled back in game one today to get the exciting win in the bottom of the seventh inning," Lady Bucs head coach Amy Fuller said.  "The momentum carried over into game two and the two conference victories were great for our team today."

The two teams return to action tomorrow when they play the final game of the three-game set.  Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Metro Kiwanis Park.
