RADFORD, VA. (April 7, 2005) - Radford posted a pair of one-run victories in a sweep of East Tennessee State this afternoon in softball action from Dedmon Center Field. The Highlanders won by the scores of 2-1 and 3-2 to improve to 23-17 on the year. The Buccaneers fall to 17-24.

Junior Amanda Walling hit a two-run homer and sophomore Breanna Felix turned in a strong pitching performance to lift Radford to a 2-1 victory over ETSU in game one. Felix went the distance, giving up zero earned runs on three hits, she struck out three a walked a batter.

Walling put RU up 2-0 in the second with a blast to leftfield, scoring freshman Ashley Taylor who singled, extending her hitting streak to seven games. ETSU made it a one-run game in the fifth on a RBI single by Amanda Haverman (Kirkwood, Mo.). Radford got out of any further trouble, turning a 3-6-4 double play.

In the seventh, the Highlander defense turned its second defensive gem. With one out, senior Sarah Beth Clayton turned a game-ending double play, catching a fly ball and gunning out Lindsay Lane (Erwin, Tenn.) who ventured too far off first.

Courtney Jenkins (Knoxville, Tenn.) suffered the loss for the Buccaneers, falling to 10-11. She allowed two hits and struck out three in four innings of work. Brittany Lehrschall (LeLand, N.C.) allowed one hit in two innings of relief.

Freshman Ashley Carlson scored the winning run on a botched rundown in the third inning as the Highlanders edged ETSU, 3-2. It was their fourth consecutive one-run game and third straight victory.

ETSU pushed a run across in the first with a two-out rally. After a pair of singles, Stephanie Gaynord (Manassas, Va.) doubled home Lane from second. Radford plated two runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-out, two-run bloop single by junior Danielle Tompkins. In the third, Gaynord tied the game at two, on a bases loaded ground out.

Both teams' pitchers performed well, despite the rainy conditions throughout game two. Taylor went the distance for Radford, earning the victory. She scattered seven hits, allowing an earned run, striking out four and walking one. ETSU starter Belinda Barrera (Fayetteville, N.C.) took the loss, allowing zero earned runs on four hits. She struck out five and walked one in four innings of work. Lehrschall posted two innings of solid relief, giving up just two hits.

Senior Lara Wohlgemuth had two of RU's six hits, including a double. Janine Sprague (Hillsborough, N.C.) and Lane each had a pair of hits for the Bucs.

ETSU returns to action this Saturday when they host SoCon foe Appalachian State for a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader at Metro Kiwanis Park at 1:00 p.m.
