JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 9, 2005) - East Tennessee State's women's tennis team swept the Appalachian State Mountaineers 7-0 Saturday afternoon at the ETSU tennis courts.  The Bucs improve to 17-6 overall, 7-2 in the SoCon, while the Mountaineers drop to 6-10, 2-6.

The Bucs started off with a win of the doubles point. Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) and Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) won their match against Meg Dlugos and Jill Parsons at No. 3 8-4. Then Sandie Knight (Adamstown, Australia) and Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) finished at No. 2 to decide the point with a win over Victoria Moody and Alexandra Grate, 8-3. At No. 1, Masha Ilina (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) defeated Lyndsey Free and Salem Kirven to complete doubles action with an 8-5 final. With their wins, Knight, Volobueva, and Halim stand at 25 doubles wins on the season and are tied for second on ETSU's single season doubles wins top ten list.

Success continued for the Bucs in singles action as the Bucs picked up all six points. Batsula quickly finished her match at No. 4 against Ann Pierce 6-0, 6-1 for the first point and Ilina followed with a win over Kirven 6-2, 6-3. Knight then picked up the clincher at No. 1 with a win against Free, 6-1, 6-2.

"I'm glad we won today 7-0," said Head Coach Steve Brooks. "We have one more match to go in the SoCon and we're looking good. Hopefully, in two weeks any weaknesses we have we will work out and improve on before heading into the tournament."

Up next for the Bucs is their final regular season match against Wofford next Saturday, April 16 before the SoCon Tournament. Match time is set for noon following a special Senior Day ceremony to honor the ETSU women's tennis team captain and lone senior Halim.

"Next week we have another tough match ahead of us against Wofford, who beat us last year, " commented Brooks.
