             BLACKSBURG, Va. (Feb. 6, 2005) - The East Tennessee State women's tennis team defeated Virginia Tech 4-3 on Sunday morning. The Bucs pick up their second win of the weekend and the season to improve to 2-2 overall with the win, while the Hokies fall to 2-2 with the loss.

            "It's always feels good to beat an ACC team," commented head coach Steve Brooks. "Virginia Tech has improved since last year and I feel fortunate to have won today."

            Virgina Tech opened up doubles action with a win at the No. 3 slot by Kate Harrington and Bethan James in a 9-7 over ETSU pair Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) and Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia). ETSU would then get a 9-7 win at the No. 1 from Masha Ilina (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland). In the deciding match for the doubles point at No. 2, Sandie Knight (Adamstown, Australia) and Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) would win 7-5 over J.J. Larson and Jessica Long to give ETSU a 1-0 lead heading into singles competition.

            The Hokies would even the score 1-1 with a win at the No. 6 by Harrington over Halim, 6-0, 6-3, but the Bucs would add two more wins to bring the score 3-1 with wins at the No. 5 and No. 2 positions from freshman Batsula and Volobueva respectively. Batsula would take her match against B. James 6-2, 6-1, and Volobueva would win her match against Larson by the same score.

            The battle at the No. 3 slot would then come to an end to narrow the score 3-2 with a win by A. James over the Bucs' Ziolkowska in a hard fought 6-4, 7-6 (3) finish.

            Knight would then secure the clinching point putting the Bucs up 4-2 in a thrilling 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 4 over Long.

            Although the match was decided, action was still tense as Ilina battled against Elazari, who is ranked 83rd nationally in singles, on court No. 1. The match would end in Elazari's favor 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3 for the 4-3 final match score.

            "We've been working hard and this win will be an inspiration as we continue to practice this season," stated Brooks. "I hope we can build on this."

            The Bucs return home next weekend to host their first regular season competition of the season on Feb. 13. The day will present three matches for the Bucs throughout the day. They will face Virginia Intermont at 9:30 a.m., Carson-Newman at 5:00 p.m., and UNC Asheville at 7:30 p.m.
