ETSU women's tennis at wraps up Hokie Fall Invitational

(Oct. 10, 2004) - The East Tennessee State University women's tennis team wrapped up competition at the Hokie Fall Invitational today in Blacksburg, Va. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. At the tournament the ETSU faced players from Appalachian State, James Madison, Radford, Winthrop and Virginia Tech. In flight A ETSU's Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) won the consolation final in a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 decision over Salem Kirven of ASU. Also in the A bracket, Sandie Knight (Adamstown, Australia) faced Paula Takahashi of Winthrop but fell 6-3, 6-2, while Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) fell to Lyndsey Free of ASU 6-2, 6-4. Mariia Ilina (Kyiv, Ukraine) faced Jessica Long of VT in the Flight B finals and fell in a tough three set match 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-2. Also in the B bracket, Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.) fell to Caroline Downs of Radford in her consolation match by a score of 6-3, 6-0, while Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) fell to Bethan James 6-4, 6-1. In flight C, Muriel Sherwood (Atlanta, Ga.) defeated Catherine Slagel 6-2, 6-0 and captured third place. In doubles action Sherwood took second. She won in the finals of Fight B with her partner Moita of Winthrop over VT's Facchina and Holmes 8-2. In Flight A doubles, ETSU's Aldea and Halim were defeated by VT's Elazari and James 8-1. ETSU will continue fall tournament action as they prepare for the Southeast Regional, which begins on Oct. 21. |
