JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 13, 2004) - In front of a crowd today for Senior Day festivities in Brooks Gymnasium, a 32 dig effort from senior libero Karen Freeburg (New Castle, Ind.) helped lead the Lady Bucs volleyball squad to defeat Elon 3-1 (30-25, 30-15, 24-30, 30-26) in Southern Conference action.  The win sends ETSU to 7-22, 5-11 in Southern Conference action, while Elon falls to 18-13, 10-5 in SoCon play. 

 

ETSU started game one with a dominant effort as Callie Kiselich (Colorado Springs, Co.) tallied six kills and two service aces en-route to the 30-25 win. The Phoenix were led by Juliena Gigon and Emily Hayes who each posted two kills in the game-one loss.  Game two proved much the same as ETSU dominated the offense.  Lady Bucs outside hitter Jennifer Sartor (Toronto, Canada) posted six kills hitting a perfect 100 percent in the win also adding seven assists, while setter Brittany Kessel (Libertyville, Ill.) dished seven assists in the 30-15 victory.

 

After the brief intermission the Phoenix hit the court with a fiery attitude taking the third game by a score of 30-24.  Leading the way for Elon was Ashley Ruckert with four kills while setter Natalie Moore posted 10 assists in the game-three victory.  ETSU was not ready to give up yet however, as they started game four taking the quick 4-1 lead.  Behind three total blocks as a team and four kills from Sartor, the Lady Bucs closed the 2004 season with a 30-26 game-four win and the 3-1 match victory. 

 

ETSU led on the defensive side posting nine total blocks compared to the eight of the Phoenix.  Led by Kiselich and Michelle Mislan (Indianapolis, Ind.) with three service aces each, ETSU dominated the category with 11 aces compared to just eight by the Phoenix.

 

For the match, the Lady Bucs were led by Sartor with 14 kills adding 23 assists, while Kiselich tallied 13 kills and three aces in the victory.  Kessel finished the afternoon with 28 assists and nine kills while Mislan and Katie Longden (Fort Dodge, Iowa) each posted eight kills for the Bucs.

 

Elon will continue action competing at the Southern Conference tournament held on the campus of Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C. while today marks the final game of the 2004 campaign for the Lady Bucs.
