Elon rallies for win over Lady Bucs Volleyball

ELON, N.C. (Oct. 8, 2004) - The Elon University volleyball team saw five players record double-digit kills and two players notch double-doubles as the team defeated Southern Conference foe East Tennessee State in a five-game match on Friday night.  The Phoenix dropped the first two games 27-30, 21-30 before rebounding to win the next three 31-29, 30-19 and 15-9.

In the first game, the Lady Buccaneers jumped to an early 3-0 lead and would lead the entire game.  East Tennessee State extended its lead to as much as nine at 25-16 before Elon closed the gap to one at 27-26.  But the Lady Bucs would push the final three points and finish the game on a Callie Kiselich (Colorado Springs, Co.) kill at 30-27.

With the second game tied 9-9, East Tennessee State took the lead 12-9 off of three straight kills from Jennifer Sartor (Toronto, Canada).   The Lady Bucs would lead the rest of the game and finish on a block by Brittany Kessel (Libertyville, Ill.) and Sara Scadiffio (Purcellville, Va.) to win the game 30-21.

Game three saw 10 ties, the last tie coming at 29-29.  Elon led the game early, but after a 15-15 tie, the Lady Bucs took the lead and led by as many as four before the Phoenix tied the game again at 27-27.   The teams battled back and forth before the 29-29 tie.  Elon took the lead 30-29 off of an East Tennessee State service error and ended the game 31-29 on an ace from Britany Westphal.

The Phoenix amassed 21 kills in game four with only one error for a .541 hitting percentage.  Lindsey Reinhardt led Elon in the game with six kills and no errors on seven attempts.  The Phoenix took the lead after a 5-5 tie and never looked back.  Up by one at 12-11, Elon went on a 6-0 scoring run, which included back-to-back aces by Emily Lucci, to lead by seven at 18-11.  Elon finished the game at 30-19 on a kill from Reinhardt.

Elon took control of the fifth game and hit .500 with 10 kills and only two errors while the Lady Bucs hit .167 with six kills and three errors.   The Phoenix led by six at 10-4 and kept that distance to finish the game 15-9 on a kill from Westphal.

Lucci and Emily Downing each recorded a double-double on the night.  Lucci notched 15 kills and 16 digs along with three service aces, one solo block and five assisted blocks.  Downing tallied 11 kills and 13 digs with one solo block and four assisted blocks.  Emily Hayes led the offensive attack with 20 kills.  Reinhardt and Westphal each added 10 kills for the Phoenix.  MK Spear notched 16 digs and Kate Hart recorded 49 assists. 

Sartor led the offense for the Lady Bucs with 18 kills. Kiselich tallied 15 kills and Scandiffio added 14.  Natalie Pittenger (Gaston Ind.) recorded 20 digs for the East Tennessee State defense while Andrea Piercy added 19. Kessel notched 56 assists for the Lady Bucs along with nine kills.

Elon returns to action on Saturday, October 9 in a 2:00 p.m. home game with Chattanooga.  East Tennessee State travels to UNC Greensboro on Saturday, October 9 for a 2:00 p.m. match.
