JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 16, 2005) - East Tennessee State head baseball coach Tony Skole announced Monday that Cleveland State Community College second baseman Michael Courtney (Knoxville, Tenn.) has committed to play for East Tennessee State beginning next season.

            The 5-10, 175-pound Courtney led Cleveland State to a 36-20 record this season, 19-13 in conference play. Michael led the team with a .359 batting average, 46 runs scored and 24 stolen bases. He also hit 11 doubles, a triple and one home run while driving in 26 runs. He was an all-conference selection for the Cougars and also earned preseason All-American honors.

            Courtney also was a three-year baseball letterwinner at West High School in Knoxville, Tenn. He was named all-district, all-region on two occasions and all-KIL following his senior season. Michael also played football and basketball at West.

            "We are very excited about Michael continuing his education and baseball career at ETSU," said Skole. "He is a great addition to our program and will immediately make a huge impact in our program. Michael is a hard-nosed competitor who plays very aggressively. This season, he was one of the top junior-college second baseman in the Southeast. Our fans will enjoy watching this young man play."
