Women's soccer works with Diadora Northeast Soccer Club to host soccer clinic

Monday, April 11, 2005

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 11, 2005) - The East Tennessee State University's women's soccer team held a soccer clinic together with the Diadora Northeast Soccer Club on Monday, April 4 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. on the ETSU campus soccer fields. Approximately 25 girls took part in the event that was requested by the club especially for the under-8 and under-10 girls.

During the event, the ETSU women's soccer players worked on various soccer moves including individual touches on the ball and passes with the girls. The ETSU student-athletes and the clinic participants also separated into teams and played small-sided games.

"It was a lot of fun for all," said Head Coach Heather Henson. "They had team names like, the Hot Tamales, Rolling Thunder, and the Tribe, but they also had team cheers and celebration after goals. There were many smiling faces from both the youth players as well as the ETSU Soccer players."

The youth players also received the opportunity to talk with the ETSU student-athletes about different topics such as their favorite position, who scores the most goals, and who is the best defender.

"It was a different take on a clinic, but we felt that it was best for this setting. I feel it is just as important for the youth to really get to know our ETSU players as well as learn new skills," commented Henson. "This format gave us the ability to accomplish both. Our ladies made the comment to me they were extremely impressed with the individual skill level of the young players. We look forward to working with them again."
