Lady Bucs still alive in A-Sun Tournament, top Gardner-Webb, 6-3

BOCA RATON, Fla. (May 11, 2006) - Thanks to a five-run third inning, the fifth-seeded ETSU softball team topped six-seed Gardner-Webb, 5-0, in the Atlantic Sun Championship Tournament, Thursday at FAU Softball Stadium.  Freshman Jessie Hackworth (Clinton, Tenn.) led the charge with a three-run homerun in the third, sealing the ETSU victory.

ETSU improves to 21-35 with the victory, while Gardner-Webb ends the season at 12-38, following its second loss of the tournament.

 

Down 3-1, sophomore Briana Knight (Brier, Wash.) got the big inning started with a single to right center.  Senior Janine Sprague (Hillsborough, N.C.) then reached on a GWU fielding error, while Knight advanced to third. 

           

Amanda Haverman (Kirkwood, Mo.) and Mary Catherine Vercoe (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) followed with back-to-back RBI-singles, tying the score at 3-apiece.  Hackworth then connected on her fifth round tripper of the season to take the 6-3 lead.

           

The Runnin' Bulldogs got their three runs in the first, starting with an RBI-triple from Christie Barlow.  Lindsey Whitfield and Joanna Ward followed up with a pair of RBI-doubles to take the early lead.

           

The Lady Bucs answered in the second, when a Stephanie Cope (Maryville, Tenn.) scored pinch runner Cat Zyskowski (Grand Rapids, Mich.).

           

Sophomore Brittany Lehrschall (Leland, N.C.) picked up the win for ETSU, improving to 4-9 following a 6 1/3-inning effort.  Lehrschall allowed just two hits in 20 batters faced.

           

Bulldog Haley Scism took the loss, after giving up nine hits and four earned runs.  Taryn Beck also made an appearance on the mound, allowing two hits and one earned run.

           

Senior Jessica Lonsinger (Dale City, Va.) had a superb game at the plate with a 3-for-3 effort.  Cope and Vercoe followed with two hits piece.

           

The Lady Bucs are scheduled to play again tomorrow, drawing fourth-seed Campbell.  Campbell lost to FAU by a 5-1 margin, after downing Mercer in the first round.  Game time is set for 5 p.m.
