SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (March 9, 2006) - The ETSU women's tennis team fell to the No. 68 ranked University of California-Santa Barbara, 5-2 at the UCSB Tennis Stadium on Thursday. The Lady Bucs fall to 10-3 on the season while the Gauchos improve to 10-5 on the year.

The Gauchos started the day by winning the doubles point in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) and Tara Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) fell at the No. 1 position to Andrea Pintar and Charlotte Scatliffe, 8-5. The doubles point was then clinched when Sandie Knight (Adamstown, Australia) and Masha Ilina (Kyiv, Ukraine) were defeated by Marielle Gruenig and Chelsea Glynn, 8-2. Senior Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) and Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) defeated Leslie Damion and Mio Fukushima, 8-5 in the No. 3 position.

In No. 1 singles, Masha Ilina was defeated by Marielle Gruenig, 6-0, 7-6 (5) while Olya Batsula was defeated by Chelsea Glynn, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in No. 2 singles. Senior Sandie Knight defeated Andrea Pintar, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.  Tara Byrne was defeated in No. 4 singles by Charlotte Scatliffe, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.  In No. 5 singles, Sylwia Ziolkowska was defeated by Leslie Damion, 7-5, 6-4. In No. 6 singles, Vita Moskaliova (Minsk, Belarus) picked up ETSU's second point defeating Mio Fukushima, 6-3, 6-4.

"It was just a bad, bad day. We played ok, but the wind was just real bad. We had an opportunity but Sylwia and Masha barely lost in their second sets, then we had to win with Tara, Olya, and Sandie and they all went to three sets, Sandie won hers but Olya and Tar both lost 6-4 in their third sets, so that means we lost," said head coach Steve Brooks.

The Buccaneers next match is scheduled for today, March 10 against Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles at 10 a.m.
