Women's tennis goes undefeated in host tournament

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (September 17, 2005) - ETSU women's tennis coach Steve Brooks had to like what he saw this weekend in the ETSU Fall Tennis Tournament. The Lady Bucs went undefeated in both singles and doubles play in the event held Friday and Saturday at the Hartsell Courts on campus and at the Freedom Hall Tennis Complex.

 

"I could not have asked for our fall to start off better," Brooks said. "I really liked the production all the way down from our seniors to our two freshmen."

 

With a field that included teams ranging from NCAA Division I to local NAIA programs, the Lady Bucs did not let up for a moment. In fact, the only scares of the weekend came when sophomore Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) took a 6-3, 7-5 victory in the second round, and junior Masha Ilina (Kyiv, Ukraine) grabbed 7-5, 6-2 win in the third round. Otherwise, there were several 6-0 and 6-1 set victories on the tournament brackets.

 

Along with the play of the upperclassmen, freshmen Vita Moskaliova (Minsk, Belarus) and Tara Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) looked strong in their first college performances. Byrne, a product of Science Hill High School, was especially praised by Brooks.

 

"Tara really played well for her first college event," Brooks said. "I was really proud of what I saw from both Tara and Vita."

 

The Lady Bucs will return to play next weekend when they travel Chattanooga to participate in the UTC Tournament.
