Tuesday, September 13, 2005

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 13, 2005) - Furman's Whitney Purser and Kerry Wooten belted 16 and 14 kills, respectively, as the Paladins downed East Tennessee State, 3-1, Tuesday night in Brooks Gymnasium, in Johnson City, Tenn.  The loss is the first home defeat this season for ETSU, which drops to 5-3 on the year.

The Lady Bucs started strong, winning 30-26 in the opening frame. Crystal Palmer (Chico, Calif.) paced the Bucs with five kills in the first stanza, as Brittany Kessel (Libertyville, Ill.) dished out seven assists.  Kessel and Jennifer Sartor (Toronto, Ontario) highlighted the Buccaneer defense in game one, with three digs each.

The Paladins, now 3-4, stormed back, winning the next three games, 30-24, 30-25, 30-21.  Furman out-hit ETSU, .233 to .127 on the match, as Paladin setter Courtney Stewardson contributed a match-high 42 assists in the win.  The Paladins committed 23 errors for the match, as ETSU recorded 30 miscues.

"We've got to be more consistent," said ETSU mentor Lindsey Devine following the loss. "We have moments of great execution, but the number of errors outweighs those moments."

Sophomore Callie Kiselich (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the Buccaneer offense, posting a season-high 14 kills, while hitting .273 for the match.  Juniors Palmer and Sartor added seven kills apiece.

Junior Jennifer Emerson (Santa Clara, Calif.) contributed 22 assists.  Freshman Jayme Barnes (Memphis, Tenn.) played well defensively, recording a career-high 14 digs.

The Lady Bucs will hit their final early season tournament of year this weekend, as they travel to Conway, S.C., for the Coastal Carolina Classic.  ETSU is set to play North Carolina A&T, Coastal Carolina, and Iowa on the weekend, opening with NC A&T on Friday, Sept. 16, at 4:30 p.m.
