Stone-cold Lady Bucs lose at Gardner-Webb, 74-50

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (March 2, 2006) - In a contest that saw ETSU score a season-low 19 first-half points, going scoreless for the first 13 minutes of the game, the Lady Bucs lost to Gardner-Webb, 74-50, Thursday evening in Paul Porter Arena.  The Runnin' Bulldogs improve to 12-15, 11-9 in Atlantic Sun play with the second with of the season over the Lady Bucs, who fall to 17-9, 13-6 in conference.

ETSU was abysmally shaky from the tip, turning the ball over in its first three possessions and five of its first seven.  ETSU would record 19 turnovers on the half, and 26 on the game.  The Lady Bucs couldn't convert when they kept ahold of the ball either, failing to get on the board until B.J. Banjo (Baltimore, Md.) drained a pair of free throws with 14:09 remaining.  ETSU continued to struggle from the field, however, going 0-for-16 from the floor before Kelly Turman (Atlanta, Ga.) swished a jumper at the 7:08 mark.

Taking advantage of ETSU's dry spell, Gardner-Webb shot out to a 13-0 lead by the 14:19 mark.

The ETSU offense then picked up for a spurt, with the Lady Bucs tallying 13 points in the next 2:19, and cutting the GWU advantage to 20-15 with 4:49 to go.  The Lady Bucs' attack went dormant for the rest of the half, as GWU ended the frame on a 14-4 run to take the 34-19 lead into the locker room.

ETSU shot a dreadful 17.9 percent from the field in the first period, going 5-for-28 from the field and 0-for-8 from behind the arc.  The Lady Bucs got more than half their first half points at the free throw line, making 9-of-10 attempts.   Brooke Wilhoit (Sevierville, Tenn.) led the squad at the line with a perfect 5-for-5 showing.

The Lady Bucs' stone-cold shooting continued in the second frame, with ETSU finishing the game at just 27.3 percent, and a season-low 5.9 percent from three-point range.  ETSU was only able to connect on 17-of-62 attempts on the night.  GWU led by as many as 29 during the second period.

The Runnin' Bulldogs put four scorers in double figures with Sequenta Blackman leading the way with 16.  Candyse Kelly netted 13, while Shameka Smith and Jessica Bryant had 12 and 11, respectively.  GWU shot 46.2 percent from the field and 40 percent from long range.

Banjo was the lone Lady Buc to score double digits, netting 14 points, 12 in the second half.  Candace Gibson (Warner Robins, Ga.) posted a game-high 11 boards, to go along with seven points.

The Lady Bucs complete the North Carolina swing on Saturday, traveling to Buies Creek to meet Campbell.  Game time is slated for 1 p.m. in the Lady Bucs' final contest of the regular season.
