Lady Bucs look for second A-Sun win of the weekend

Friday, January 06, 2006

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Jan. 6, 2006) - The Lady Bucs will be looking to stay perfect in the Atlantic Sun on Saturday afternoon, as they complete the Northern Florida swing with a matchup against Jacksonville.  ETSU won the first half on the trip on Thursday with an 80-59 win over North Florida.

About the Game ...

ETSU will be looking to stay undefeated in the A-Sun with a win over Jacksonville tonight, while the Dolphins will be vying for their first win in Conference play. The Lady Bucs nabbed a 80-59 decision over JU's cross-town rival North Florida on Thursday, while the Dolphins suffered a tough 66-60 home loss to Kennesaw State.

Scouting the Dolphins ...

The Dolphins are currently 3-7 and have yet to pick up an A-Sun win at 0-3. JU has fallen to UNF, Kennesaw State, and FAU in league play, while its three wins have come against Bethune-Cookman, and Savannah State twice. A trio of Dolphins are averaging double digits with Ashley Williams leading the way with 16.9 ppg, while Sheena Carpenter, and Nakina Alford are tallying 12.9, and 10.0, respectively. Williams and Carpenter have also been tough on the boards, each posting just below nine rebounds a night. The pair are also two of the best rebounders in the league, both ranked in the A-Sun's top five. Carpenter and teammate Regina Omoite have been the Dolphins' most productive passers, each with 31 assists on the season.

The Series ...

Tonight's meeting is the first in program history.

Last time out ...

Senior B.J. Banjo (Baltimore, Md.) scored her 1,000th-career point on Thursday night, as the Lady Bucs topped North Florida, 80-59, to remain unblemished in the Atlantic Sun at 4-0. The senior needed just a single point to reach the milestone going into tonight's game, but she didn't stop there, netting a game-high 23 points. Banjo becomes the 14th player in program history to reach the feat, and the second in the past calendar year as former teammate Tiffani Mayes eclipsed the barrier on Jan. 22, 2005. Jackie Beik paced the Ospreys with 22 points, including 14 in the second half. Beik also posted a game-high nine rebounds in the loss. Tamara Hubbard was next in the line for UNF with 18, as the Ospreys drop to 3-8 on the season, 1-3 in the A-Sun. Banjo led three Lady Bucs in double digits with Candace Gibson (Warner Robins, Ga.) tallying 15, and Kelly Turman (Atlanta, Ga.) adding a season-high 14. Jenny Norman (Peachtree City, Ga.) led the Bucs on the boards with a team-high seven. With the score tied 8-8 early, the Lady Bucs mounted a seven-point run, paced by four points from Gibson, to take the 15-8 lead. But the Ospreys would make a surge of their own, rattling off nine-straight points to gain the 17-15 advantage. Hubbard led the Ospreys early on, posting nine points in the opening eight minutes. The Lady Bucs would weather the storm however, ending the half with a 22-7 run, to take a commanding 37-22 lead going into the locker room. Though UNF was able to remain closer in the second half (43-37), it was never able to recover from Lady Bucs' frame-ending run.
