(May 2, 2006) - After struggling all season delivering two-out RBI, the Bucs finally put it all together, scoring nine runs with two outs, and doubling up UNC-Asheville 14-7 Tuesday night from McCormick Field.  The win completes a season sweep over the Bulldogs for the second consecutive season.

 

The Bucs (23-21) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning with two unearned runs.  Junior C.J Lee (Bristol, Va.) reached on a throwing error by shortstop Matt Henson to lead off the inning, and later scored on junior Michael Courtney's (Knoxville, Tenn.) sacrifice fly.  Junior Justin Aughey (Davie, Fla.) followed the sac fly with a single to left, driving in senior Matt Traylor (Knoxville, Tenn.).

 

After the Bulldogs (19-27) scored in the third to cut the lead to 2-1, ETSU scored three runs in the fourth; all with two outs.  Freshman third baseman Ben Allen (Kingsport, Tenn.) appeared to end the inning with a strikeout, but the strike three pitch from starter Graham Baughn was wild, and Allen reached first safely.  Courtney followed with a single up the middle, and Aughey cleared the bases with a double off the top of the right field wall.  Senior shortstop Chuck Hargis (Powell, Tenn.) capped the scoring in the inning, driving in Aughey with a single to left.

 

Senior Shane Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) led off the fifth inning with a double off the right field wall.  Lee tripled Byrne home later in the inning, giving the Bucs a 6-1 advantage.

 

ETSU put the game away with five runs in the seventh, highlighted by a bases loaded, base clearing double from Courtney.  Junior Stephen Douglas (Kennesaw, Ga.) led off the frame with a double to right center, and came home on senior Blake Church's (Roswell, Ga.) single through the left side.  After a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases, Courtney delivered the two-out, base clearing double.  Courtney came around to score after Aughey reached on an error by third baseman Steve Burnich, staking the Bucs to a 10-run lead.

 

Church finished 2-for-6 with four RBI on the night, and Courtney also drove in four runs, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.  Aughey finished the day with three RBI, going 2-for-5 and also scoring two runs.  Eight of the Buccaneer starters tallied a hit on the night as the Bucs pounded out 15 total.

 

Junior Tony Lombardi (Windsor, Calif.) improved to 2-7 on the year, surrendering one run on four hits in three innings of work.  Lombardi was eligible for the victory based on the predetermined exit rule.  Baughn (3-2) took the loss,  giving up six runs on nine hits in five innings.

 

The Bucs return to action Friday night as they finally return home, beginning a crucial conference series with Stetson.  First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m.
