Bucs tennis rolls, continues strong play at Volunteer State Challenge

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (October 14, 2006) - The ETSU men's tennis team took six of its seven singles matches and won six of its seven doubles matches Saturday, as the Bucs continued its solid play at the Volunteer State Challenge.


ETSU faced Vanderbilt during its first match of the day. The Bucs won six of the seven matches, with the only drop coming as senior Felix Insaurralde (
Asuncion, Paraguay) fell to No. 28 Ryan Preston, 6-2, 7-5.

 

Juniors Lisandro Picardo (Mar del Plata, Argentina) and Sebastian Serrano (Cartagena, Colombia) picked up wins as they defeated their opponents in straight sets. Picardo defeated Vijay Paul, 6-4, 6-4, while Serrano defeated Evan Dufaux, 7-5, 6-2.

 

Enrique Olivares (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) defeated Nathan Sachs, 6-4, 6-4 as newcomer Predrag Burmazovic (Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro) defeated Scott Lieberman, 6-3, 6-3.  Travis Sandlant (Werribee, Australia) defeated Jordan Magarik, 6-0, 6-4, while freshman Daniel Isaza (Medellin, Colombia) cruised to an easy win over James Moye, 6-2, 6-1.

 

The Bucs started the doubles portion of the event against MTSU taking two of the three matches. Insaurralde and Picardo fell to No. 3 Marco Born and Andreas Siljestrom, 8-4 while Alex Ahlgren (Tyreso, Sweden) and Sandlant defeated Marc Boiron and Joao Pailiello, 9-7. The duo of Olivares and Serrano picked up the second win as they defeated Morgan Richard and Marc Rocafort, 8-5.

 

In their second doubles match, ETSU swept Memphis in all four matches as Insaurralde and Picardo defeated Benny Fischer and Amrit Narasimhan, 8-6. Ahlgren and Sandlant picked up their second win of the day as they defeated Jimmy Koughassian and Charlie Ramsay, 8-5.

 

Olivares/Serrano and Burmazovic/Isaza cruised to easy victories as they defeated their opponents by a pair of 8-3's. Olivares and Serrano defeated Tezar Putra and Vinny Craveiro while Burmazovic and Isaza defeated Spencer Heflin and Cody Loup.


ETSU will wrap up play Sunday in the Volunteer State Challenge, competing against
Tennessee in singles. Action will begin at 8:30 a.m.
