Saturday, January 20, 2007

LEXINGTON, Ky. (January 20, 2007) - The Lady Bucs tennis team fell to the No. 18 Kentucky Wildcats today, 7-0 at the Boone Tennis Center. ETSU falls to 2-1 on the year while Kentucky improves to 1-0.

The Wildcats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as they swept all three doubles matches. Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) and Tara Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) fell to the No. 3 tandem of Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk, 8-2 in the first position, while Masha Ilina (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) fell to Carolina Escamilla and Sarah Woestmann, 8-3 in the No. 2 position. In the No. 3 position Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) and Vita Moskaliova (Minsk, Belarus) fell to Christine Johnston and Caroline Winebrenner, 8-4.

In single action, freshman Yevgeniya Stupak fell to Carolina Escamilla, 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 3 slot, while Olya Batsula fell to Kim Coventry, 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 position. In No. 2 singles Tara Byrne fell to No. 60 Joelle Schwenk, 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 2 position as senior Masha Ilina fell after a hard fought match, 6-7, 6-1, 6-0 to Sarah Woestmann in the No. 4 position.

Kentucky completed their sweep of the Lady Bucs as Vita Moskaliova fell Christine Johnston 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 6 position and junior Elena Volobueva fell to Jessica Guiggioli, 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 5 slot.

"Overall I felt we played well. Kentucky executed well and made no mistakes and we just weren't able to convert when we had more game points. Hopefully, we will take what we got from today into tomorrow's match and perform well and have a good year.", said head coach Steve Brooks.

The Lady Bucs will continue their road-swing as they travel to Nashville to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores. ETSU will be looking for revenge as Vanderbilt eliminated the Lady Bucs from the NCAA Championships in 2006, defeating them 4-0 in the first round. This will be the second meeting between the two teams. Follow all ETSU women's tennis action at www.etsubucs.com.
