Bucs sweep Bulldogs in Atlantic Sun action

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 21, 2008) - Seventh inning heroics in game two by Briana Knight (Brier, Wash.) and Cheniece Cason (Moreno Valley, Calif.) helped the Bucs earn the doubleheader sweep over Gardner-Webb, winning game one 4-2 and the nightcap 3-2 Friday afternoon at Metro-Kiwanis Park.
In game one of the doubleheader ETSU took a 4-0 lead in the first three innings, scoring one run in the bottom of the second as Trisha Massenzo (Russellville, Tenn.) scored on a Marissa Hardy (
The Bulldogs began to chip away at the lead as Mandy Ward had a solo home run to open the fourth inning against ETSU starter Marisa Hardy. Jessi Williams connected in the fifth inning with another solo shot. However, Hardy was able to regroup to hold Gardner-Webb scoreless in the final two frames.
In the second game of the doubleheader Gardner-Webb took the early 1-0 lead as Melody Harrell singled to left field and then stole second base in the first inning. Harrell then scored on a Mandy Ward single.
The Bucs responded in the bottom of the second as Katie Henderson led off the inning with a single up the left side before stealing second and advancing to third when Jessie Hackworth (
Gardner-Webb took the 2-1 lead in the fifth inning as Lindsay Cox reached on a fielder's choice before stealing second. She then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kelly Linsley before scoring on a Melody Harrell single.
ETSU continued to battle and tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning when Trisha Massenzo singled and advanced to second on a Katie Henderson grounder. Massenzo then scored on a double to left field by Marisa Hardy.
In the seventh inning senior Briana Knight led off the inning with her fourth career triple and was brought home by a Cheniece Cason single to end the game.
Hardy picked up her sixth and seventh wins of the season starting both game one and game two.
Offensively the Bucs were led by Katie Henderson with three hits, followed by Trisha Massenzo, Marisa Hardy and Vicki McCoy each with two hits.
