Picardo and Isaza claim Flight II doubles title at Southern Intercollegiate

Monday, September 24, 2007

ATHENS, Ga. (Sept. 24, 2007) - Senior Lisandro Picardo (Mar del Plata, Argentina) and sophomore Daniel Isaza (Medellin, Colombia) won two straight matches to bring home the Flight II doubles title Monday at the Southern Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Georgia.

The duo of Picardo and Isaza took on Tyler Hochwalt and Eric Corace of Florida in the semifinals, defeating them, 8-6. In the championship match, the pair downed another Gator team, this time taking on Dan Cash and Billy Mulligan in a tight, 9-7 match.

"There were a lot of good teams here and they beat back to back Florida teams. Florida's squad is so deep and it's really amazing. We took a lot of good teams out and the guys played well," said head coach Yaser Zaatini.  "Overall we played some great matches over the weekend against some people that were ranked extremely high. Unfortunately, we had a lot of first round matches with one seeds and it's all about timing and when you have to face them. Sometimes if you face them in later rounds they might be more tired. I think we're playing well and everybody is very complimentary about the type of team that we had and think that we are something to contend with. I think we are very solid and hopefully we can make something."

This marks the second straight year that a doubles team from ETSU has won the Flight II doubles title. Picardo paired with former Buc Felix Insaurralde in the 2006 Southern Intercollegiate, taking the title with an 8-6 victory over teammates Enrique Olivares (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) and Alex Ahlgren (Tyreso, Sweden).
