Bucs tennis completes day one of Southern Intercollegiate

ATHENS, Ga. (Sept. 21, 2007) - The ETSU men's tennis team began competition Friday at the Southern Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Georgia. Action continues Saturday with the second and third rounds of singles play and the second round of doubles.

 

Competing in the Flight I singles, Enrique Olivares (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) defeated Jason Morganstern of Wake Forest, 6-2, 7-6(4) before falling to preseason No. 4 and top-seeded Travis Helgeson of Georgia, 6-3, 6-2. Senior Sebastian Serrano (Cartagena, Colombia) and Predrag Burmazovic (Belgrade, Serbia) both earned first round byes. In the round of 64 Serrano dropped to preseason No. 24 Marek Sramek of South Alabama, 6-4, 6-4. Burmazovic fell to Georgia's Christian Vitulli, 7-5, 6-3.

 

In Flight II Daniel Isaza (Medellin, Colombia) had a first round bye and fell to Jeremy Tweedt of Tennessee in a hard fought match, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, while Alex Ahlgren (Tyreso, Sweden) earned a bye and then advanced over Johnny Zalooni of Florida State in a walkover. He will square off against Daniel Knouse of Furman at 11 a.m. Senior Lisandro Picardo (Mar del Plata, Argentina) also had a first round bye before defeating Mercer's Ivan Besancon in the round of 6-4, 6-3. He will face Georgia State's Anze Cevak on Saturday.

 

Competing in Flight III, newcomer Sergio Velez (Medellin, Colombia) had a first round bye before defeating Tim Barnoud of Louisville, 6-4, 6-0. He will square off against Maximillien Genuini of Mississippi State at 11 a.m. Also competing in Flight III, Alex Apell (Savsjo, Sweden) fell to Morten Siversten of Louisville, 6-0, 2-0 before retiring to injury.

 

The only doubles team to see action on Friday was the duo of Ahlgren and Velez who fell to Pedros Campos and Ivan Cressoni of South Carolina, 8-4 in the Flight I doubles. Olivares and Serrano are set to face Travis Helgeson and Jamie Hunt of Georgia on Saturday in Flight I doubles while Isaza and Picardo will square off against the winners of the Miami/Morehead State match.

 

"We played extremely overall. Enrique won a pretty good match this morning and he played very well against Helgeson. Helgeson just had an answer for everything Enrique did. Sebastian also played well against the No. 24 guy in the nation. It was a match that lasted for several hours. Hopefully tomorrow we will continue to play well," said head coach Yaser Zaatini.
