ETSU volleyball splits day two at Phoenix Classic

ELON, S.C. (Sept. 1, 2007) -The ETSU volleyball team split their games Saturday dropping the early match against Morehead State in a close one,  21-30, 30-25, 21-30, 30-20, 10-15, but rebounded to sweep Radford in three games, 30-8, 30-18, 30-20, at the Phoenix Classic.

 

            "We were inconsistent this morning and it was hard to get into the flow of things, but we came back this afternoon and played with good consistency," said Bucs head coach Lindsey Devine. "It was good to close things out with a win."

 

            Senior Kaena Apana (Waianae, Hawaii), was great in the back all tournament with 53 digs today, and 73 for the tournament. Senior Michelle Mislan (Indianapolis, Ind.), and freshman Whitney Cogburn(Kingsport,Tenn.) both were contributors for the Bucs in their win over Radford.

 

            "Kaena covered so much ground in the back for us, and Whitney Cogburn came off of the bench strong," Devine said. "I think that Michelle Mislan had a very good tournament.

 

The Bucs had an impressive 12-3 run in game one against Radford sparked by senior Marissa Mortensen (Elk Grove, Ill.), and freshman Laura Waddell (Lynchburg, Va.). Waddell had 21 kills on the day, and led the Bucs with nine in the Radford match. Mortensen totaled 64 assists and had her third double-double of the season in the Morehead State match with 36 assists and 13 digs.

 

            The Bucs are now 5-2 on the season and will head to Morgantown, W.Va. next weekend for the West Virginia Volleyball Classic where they will take on host West Virginia, Indiana State and Butler. Their first match will be Friday at 5 p.m. as they take on the Butler Bulldogs.
