Wiles' career-high 19-point effort not enough to carry ETSU past Davidson

Thursday, December 06, 2007

DAVIDSON, N.C. (Dec. 6, 2007) - Sophomore TaRonda Wiles (Danville, Va.) scored a career-high 19 points, but it was not enough to carry ETSU past Davidson as the Wildcats downed the Lady Bucs, 79-61, Thursday night inside Belk Arena.

Wiles led all scorers as she finished 7-of-14 from the floor, grabbed five rebounds and forced three steals. Sophomore guard Siarre Evans (Griffin, Ga.) made it seven straight games to reach double figures in scoring, ending with 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Davidson had three players score in double figures, as Danielle Hemerka led the pack with 16 points.

In the first half, both teams played evenly up through the first media timeout as the game was tied at eight with 15:18 on the clock. Wiles helped guide the Lady Bucs, scoring six of their first eight points. However, from there the Lady Buccaneers went cold and Davidson used a 14-2 run to break the game open, 22-10. During the run, the Wildcat defense held ETSU scoreless for almost five minutes, until Brittany Daniels' (Shellman, Ga.) lay-up ended the drought at the 11:32 mark. ETSU would fight back as they would get to within six, 27-21, with 1:21 remaining in the half, but a Kelly Gardner lay-up sent Davidson into the break with an eight point advantage.

ETSU scored a season-low 21 points in the first 20 minutes, and hit only 25-percent of its shots (7-28). On the other side, Davidson finished 11-of-24 (45.8 percent) from the field, but connected on four three-pointers where as the Lady Bucs finished 0-for-4. Both teams had trouble holding onto the ball, as they combined for 30 turnovers in the first stanza with ETSU forcing 18 of them.

The Lady Bucs started the second half lowering the Wildcats' lead to six, 32-26, but back-to-back threes by Davidson pushed its advantage back to 12 with 15:56 to play. ETSU answered with a run of its own, posting a 12-4 spurt to cut the lead to four, 42-38, with 11:17 remaining in the contest. Wiles sparked the Lady Bucs during the run, scoring eight of the 12 points for ETSU. Unfortunately, the Lady Buc run took too much life out of them, as Davidson regained advantage of the game with a 17-5 blitz and ETSU could never recover. ETSU cut the lead to 10 two separate times, but Davidson nailed its free throws to claim victory.

For the contest, ETSU was held to a season-low in points and field goal percentage (29.0); while Davidson hit 46-percent of shots (23-50). The Lady Bucs were out-rebounded, 40-39, ending their five-game stretch of winning the battle of the boards. ETSU did tie its season-high by forcing 27 turnovers, but the Lady Buccaneers allowed nine three-point field goals and only connected on one.

The Lady Bucs will head back to Johnson City and take their final exams before heading to Cincinnati for a showdown with 2007 Atlantic10 tournament champion Xavier, on Sunday, Dec. 16. Tip is set for 2 p.m. inside the Cintas Center. Please visit www.ETSUBucs.com for more information on Lady Buccaneer basketball and all other ETSU athletic news.
