Bucs ground Eagles, 1-0

Friday, October 26, 2007

Fort Meyers, Fla. (Oct. 26, 2007) - The ETSU women's soccer team extended its win streak to two as the Bucs dropped the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles, 1-0 on Friday night. The Bucs improve to 8-5-3 overall and 4-4-1 in conference play while the Eagles fall to 10-6-0 and 6-3-0.

The Bucs and the Eagles battled for the lead in the first period as Florida Gulf Coast outshot the Bucs, 5-1, but were unable to convert sending the teams into halftime scoreless.

In the second half, Jordan Monty (Mesquite, Texas) broke through the Eagle defense to score the lone goal of the night during the 55th minute. This marks Monty's ninth goal of the season and a new career record for the sophomore midfielder. She scored eight goals during her freshman campaign.

Freshman goalkeeper Rachel Van Horn (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) earned her second career shutout, while making six saves on the night. Offensively, five Bucs contributed to the attack as Terri Miller (Cape Coral, Fla.) recorded two shots, while Monty, Aubree Snyder (Reading, Pa.), Krista Toliver (Arlington, Texas) and Jessica Huntington (Newport News, Va.) each contributed one.

"It was definitely not a pretty win but we will certainly take it. Florida Gulf Coast did a very good job and played a system that gave us some trouble," said head coach Heather Henson. "We did a good job of learning from our earlier match in the season against Campbell and our defense was able to maintain their composure despite giving up a lot of corners. The defense helped us keep our stability and it was a really great battle."

The Bucs will look to extend their winning streak to three as they face Stetson on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. Keep up with the ETSU women's soccer team by visiting www.ETSUBucs.com.
