JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 15, 2007) - Earlier this week the ETSU men's cross country team claimed the second slot in the Atlantic Sun Coaches Poll, and the Buccaneer runners proved to the conference why they belonged atop the leader board, as they went on to win the Winthop/Asics Invitational Saturday morning at the Winthrop Coliseum and Farm.

The Bucs beat out host Winthrop for the crown by scoring 27 points to the Eagles 35. Rounding out the top-five was UNC-Greensboro (69 points), Davidson (113 points) and Wofford (125 points).

"Our guys stepped up to the challenge this morning and ran a solid race," said head ETSU men's cross country coach David Walker, whose squad won in only its second race of the 2007 season. "I am very proud of how the entire team looks this early in the season, and now we need to continue to build off this win."

Sophomore Kenneth Rotich (Nairobi, Kenya) enjoyed his first meet of the season, as he placed first in the Gold Division, which consisted of all Division I programs. The Kenyan speedster finished the 8K course in 25:13, and averaged just over a five minute mile (5:05) for the race. Juniors Jeff Crane (Taylors, S.C.) and Michael Deren (Blasdell, N.Y.) finished fourth and fifth respectively. Crane continued to build on his stellar 2007 season, finishing with a time of 25:47; while Deren improved immensely from last weekend's race, posting a mark of 26:04. Jordan Ladd (Lyn, Ontario) and J Penny (Telford, Tenn.) rounded out the scoring attack for the Buccaneers. Ladd finished in seventh with a time of 26:22, and Penny came in 10th with a mark of 26:57.

As a team ETSU finished with an overall time of 2:10:23, which averaged out to 26:04 per runner; while Winthrop posted a total time of 2:11:04, an average of 26:12.

The ETSU cross country team will now have two weeks off before its next competition. The Bucs next meet will be Saturday, Sept. 29, when ETSU competes in the 6th Annual Greater Louisville Classic.
