ETSU Baseball drops rubber match to Lipscomb, 4-3

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (April 27, 2008) - The ETSU baseball team dropped the rubber game to Lipscomb on a rainy Sunday at Lee Marsh Stadium in Nashville, Tenn., 4-3.

 

ETSU (13-31, 9-18) was out hit 8-2 in the game. Starter Brandon Langston (Ringgold, Ga.) went five innings allowing three runs on seven hits and stuck out two while walking two.

 

The Bisons scored first in the bottom of the third as Blake Bratcher hit a three-run home run to right center to give Lipscomb a 3-0 lead.

 

ETSU cut into the Lipscomb lead in the top of the fourth as Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) drove in Troy Mendez (Roswell, Ga.) on a grounder to first to make the score 3-1. In the next at bat Derek Trent (Kingsport, Tenn.) drove in Anthony Russell (Waldorf, Md.) on a sacrifice fly to right to cut the Bisons' lead to 3-2.

 

In the top of the sixth, with the bases loaded Russell came in to score on a wild pitch to tie that game at 3-3.

 

The Bisons scored the game winning run in the bottom of the ninth as pinch runner Brad Gooch came in to score on a wild pitch to make the final 4-3.

 

Despite getting the loss senior Matt McGahey (Jonesborough, Tenn.) pitched well as he went 3.1 innings allowing one run on one hit while striking out six and walking one. Nick Belcher (Abingdon, Va.) and Mendez had the only hits of the game for the Bucs.

 

The Bucs are back in action Tuesday at 7 p.m. as they will host North Carolina Central for a two-game mid-week series.
